Cereria Foundation

The Cereria Giuseppe Di Giorgio is founded in the heart of Rome in Trastevere. The candles are all produced manually and are essentially for liturgical use.

1928

The Cereria is getting bigger

Giuseppe's sons, Salvatore and Angelo, begin to work with their father, inaugurating a real artisan factory in via San Francesco di Sales called Cereria Pontificia Giuseppe Di Giorgio and sons. A point of pride is the title of pontifical supplier awarded with official nomination by the Vatican.

1950

The patent for the liturgical lamp is developed

The liturgical lamp is a type of candle that burns before the Blessed Sacrament and lasts a week without ever being extinguished. Before then, as the liturgy required, only olive oil could burn in front of the Blessed Sacrament, but it soiled the altar cloths and had to be topped up often to last a long time. Angelo Di Giorgio tried to overcome these difficulties by experimenting with a candle with a very high oil content. When he managed to calibrate the wick, oil, wax and duration, he thought of patenting the liturgical lamp for the Blessed Sacrament which was commended by His Holiness Pius XII and approved by the Sacred Ecclesiastical Dicasteries. This was a huge success that led Cereria to be known and respected throughout Italy.

1962

The new factory

the first stone of the new Pomezia factory is laid.

1964

Born of the new Cereria Di Giorgio SpA

The new factory is in Pomezia, leaving sales in the Trastevere areas, today one of the oldest shops in Rome. With the availability of these new spaces, the range of products also expands, which from exclusively liturgical also become for domestic and ornamental use. The third generation of the Di Giorgio family looks to new markets.

1967

Expansion

A new 2000 m2 warehouse is built with the most modern machines for making ornamental candles. The range of candles produced is increasingly wider.

1971

Big projects

One of the most beautiful and evocative pages in the history of Cereria Di Giorgio is the lighting of the Capitoline Palaces, on the occasion of Christmas in Rome. A unique show with more than 2000 Roman torches that make the Roman monuments shine with their light. Cereria Di Giorgio also deals with the lighting of the Colosseum for the Via Crucis on Good Friday celebrated by the Holy Father, which is broadcast worldwide every year. For this occasion, more than 1000 torches and around 20 braziers are used.

1990

The Cereria is renewed

In 1990 a new wing with new offices was built. Furthermore, very modern machines for candles, machines for coloring and polishing candles and for the production of tealights are installed. The last frontier for the Di Giorgio family's business, now in its fourth generation, is the constant commitment to quality while respecting the environment. Quality means careful choice of the vegetable and mineral waxes used, the use of lead-free cottons, the use of selected dyes and perfumes and control of production procedures.

2008

The Centenary!

An uncommon achievement, Cereria Di Giorgio celebrates its first centenary. For the occasion, a large showroom and sales point was opened in Pomezia. Also on this date, the first 100 years were celebrated in our Pomezia headquarters with those who have contributed to our success over the years: employees, customers, suppliers and family.
